I Wrote some texts for my book Cities of the Gold. This first one is the "Doctor of the Slaves"

Tenha a santa paciência!
– Tá acreditando não, né? Conhece Quirino Coité?
– Lá de Santa Efigênia?
– O próprio. Ele tava com asma. O bicho vivia sem fôlego e sem trabalhar direito.
Aí, todo dia o feitor moía o bicho no pau.

– Coitado.

– Sei. Um bichão enorme, da boca comprida…
– Ele mesmo. Ó, olha o dentão do bicho aqui no colar, ó!

Doctor of the Slaves

– Chicôo! Oh, Chicôo…
– What is it boy? Are you crazy? If the master catches you here talking to me, he'll…
– Chicôo, I can't handle it anymore, Chicôo…
– What's the matter?
– My tooth, Chicôo. It's aching way too much, boy…
– Even now, it's still hurting, Calú!?
– Is there ever a time when something this painful doesn't hurt? Is there?
– Ah! Let me have a look? Come to the light where I can see it better, come…
– What do you see, Chicôo?
– Your tooth looks fine. It is as white as white can be!
– But then why is it hurting so bad, Chicôo?
– I have no clue, don't forget that I am a slave, not a doctor?
– Ah, Chicôo, but this darn thing won't not stop aching…
– Why don't you go to the doctor Luiz Gomes Ferreira?
– Who?
– Doctor Luiz Gomes. You know him, don't you?
– No, I don't.
– He live's here in Vila Rica, and takes care of us slaves.
– Yeah?
– Yes! And he does not charge us anything at all. And besides being a doctor, the
man also works in witchcraft. He has been known to prescribe all kinds of things, the
blood of a dragon, milk of a black dog, milk of a woman who has just had a baby girl,
smoked caveira's tooth, egg of a barely cooked owl, a powdered crow's heart,…
– Yuck, Chicôo! That's disgusting? Who is crazy enough to eat powdered crow heart?
– Well, someone who wants to be healed would eat anything, Calú.
– But is it really going to heal anyone Chicôo? Have mercy!
– You don't believe me, do you? Do you know Quirino Coité?
– From Santa Efigenia?
– Exactly. He had Asthma. He was constantly out of breath and wasn't able to
work right. So, everyday, the master would hurt him really bad with wooden stick.
– Poor thing!
– Anyway, they took him to the doctor Luiz Gomes and do you know what he prescribed?
– I have no idea.
– He told Quirino to catch two newly born kittens, put them in a new clay pan,
while still alive and stick them in the oven, until they dried out.
After a while in the oven,
the kittens turned to dust and that's the dust that cured the man.
– Virgin Mary, Chicôo! I am not going to this doctor.
– Hey, don't be such a chicken, Calú. After one whiff of this cat dust, and that
Quirino was breathing like a new boy.
– Well, alright. I´ll go. With this tooth ache I can't afford to be afraid…
– Look here, the doctor lives in that large, pink house, there on Rua das Flores.
Later on, you come here and tell me if your tooth is healed or not.

2 days later…

– Chicôo! Ô, Chicôo…
– What is it boy, what is it this time?
– Chicôo, I can't handle it anymore, Chicôo…
– But is it still the same cursed tooth Calú? Didn't I tell you to go to the doctor Luiz Gomes Ferreira?
– And I went Chicôo.
– What did he prescribe?
– He asked me to pull out the tooth of a living dog, string it on a necklace and not to take it off my neck…
– And did you do as he asked?
– I did. You know that black dog from Libório Perneta, the one who lives near the church of San Francisco?
– I know the one. An enormous animal with a huge mouth…
– Exactly. Just take a look at the large tooth here on my necklace! It still has a little bit of blood on it.
– Then, you took the tooth off the dog, placed it on your neck and your tooth still hurts, Calú?
– The tooth doesn't ache anymore, Chicôo… that went away really fast.
– Then why are you moaning and groaning like this, man?
– It's because when I was taking the tooth from that dog, he bit me right in the…
– My God, Calú! You really are dumb! Couldn't you find a smaller dog?
– Ah, Chicôo, it hurts a lot… Chicôooo…
